The Newbery Medal was named for John Newbery, a British bookseller active in the 18th Century.
The Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, awards this medal every year to "the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children."
In addition to one annual medal winner, the selection committee also selects a few Newbery honor books.
