Rare Books Collection: Rare Book Guidelines

How to use rare books in the library

Criteria for Rare

The printed materials must meet at least one of these criteria, preferably more than one to be included in a rare collection:

 A.  The relative scarcity, price or unique attributes of the item would make it difficult to acquire in the future.

B.  In addition to a level of scarcity, the materials are in a delicate condition warranting reduced patron access.  Examples of this may be:

  • Books with poor binding
  • Materials with worn, torn or missing pages
  • Pamphlets and other ephemera

C.  The designated rare copy is of particular interest to the University of the Cumberlands community, contains an author’s signature or has an intact dust jacket.

How to Use a Rare Book in the Library

  1. Contact a librarian (use the staff link on the library homepage for contact information) to set up an appointment. *We cannot guarantee access to the rare book collection without an appointment, but you can ask during regular library hours.*
  2. Search the UC Cat to find the material(s) you wish to consult.  Make sure to write down the titles, call numbers, and if they are located in Cumberland Rare or Appalachian Rare Collection.
  3. Make sure to bring a University of the Cumberlands ID or Drivers' License and a pencil or personal electronic device (i.e. laptop) to take notes.
  4. Check in with library staff and sign the Agreement for using Rare Book Materials in the Library form.
  5. After finishing with material(s), bring them to the librarian and retrieve your identification materials.
